What happens if you mix copper sulfate with barium chloride and cloridric acid?

This is for a school project. When we mixed the copper sulfate with the barium chloride, the substance became a deeper shade of blue. After adding the chloridric acid, it became even more blue. My team mates think that we did it correctly, but I think that something went wrong. What is supposed to happen?
